Nike has announced a partnership with US-based delivery bag manufacturer AirTites, bringing the company’s Air Tite brand to the United States.
The partnership comes after the retailer was forced to shut down a distribution centre in North Carolina because of a leak of the company-branded air bags into the local environment, according to The Washington Post.
The AirTiter family owns the manufacturing and distribution of AirTitans in the United Kingdom.
Nike says it will continue to sell AirTis to retailers, and will “offer other ways to purchase AirTits in the future”.
AirTites is the name of the brand, which has been a staple in US-made school bags for decades.
It has become a key piece of luggage in the modern backpack, which includes everything from shoes to jackets and has become synonymous with the sport of golf.
It is one of the most popular brands among US consumers, with sales rising by more than 15 per cent last year, according the US National Retail Federation.
Nikes AirTITes have been available since 2014.
The brand has sold more than 1.6m bags since then, according US Census data.
Nixle has been expanding its online store for school bags since 2015, adding more than 400 new items, including airtight packing and a new travel app, Nixle Student Pack.
In March, Nike announced it would invest $1bn in its US distribution arm, making it the world’s largest retailer of school bags.
