(AP) — A bed packing kit can save lives, but it can also cost taxpayers thousands of dollars, according to a government report released Wednesday.
The report said that since 1996, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has spent more than $6 million buying bed packing bags that can be used in a variety of emergency room emergency rooms.
The agency said the kits can save the lives of people with life-threatening illnesses, but the bags also can cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
The CDC spent about $6.7 million buying the kits.
It also spent about 2.1 million to install and maintain about 1,000 of the products, the report said.
In total, the agency spent about 1.5 million dollars on bed packing kits for hospitals.
The kits include: Bedding packs, or a “bag,” that hold a sleeping bag, a pillow, a blanket and other items for the bed.
The bags can also hold an infant, baby, small infant or toddler.
Each bag costs about $40.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal agency that runs the health insurance program for the poor, is responsible for the cost of the kits and other equipment.
A CDC spokeswoman said bed packing products are not part of the agency’s standard equipment.
The kit can cost as much as $1,000.
The spokeswoman said the agency also purchases bedding boxes that can store more than a dozen beds for up to 24 hours.
The beds can be taken away after a short time, she said.
The price of the bed packing, though, can be steep.
A bedpacking bag can cost about $300,000 to $1 million, according the CDC.
In some cases, it can cost more than that, the CDC said.
A bag of 20 bedding packs could cost as little as $2,000, and the cost could go up, depending on the size of the hospital, the price of air conditioning and the type of hospital, according a report by the Centers For Disease Control.
The bureau’s budget is $4.4 billion annually, and it spends about $1.5 billion on bedding kits.
The department has spent about 10.7 billion on beds, according as much money on bed care and other health care services.
The federal government spent $8.7 trillion on health care last year, about $2.5 trillion more than in 2010.
The American Medical Association, which represents the American medical industry, is a staunch opponent of bed packing.
Abedin Tabb said bed padding has a higher impact on the elderly than other types of padding because they can be more painful to wear and wear over time.
The medical community says there is no medical benefit to using bed padding.
The AAP also said that in addition to reducing the number of beds needed to treat an illness, bed padding could prevent the spread of germs and infections.
The organization said bed packs should be used only in emergency rooms or in the event of a life-or-death situation.
The National Association of Realtors said bedpacking is a bad idea because it is not cost-effective for businesses to buy or rent them.
Realtor Mark Miller said the association opposes bed padding because it costs businesses more money and it takes away from the value of homes.
“When a house goes into foreclosure, it’s going to be much harder to sell the property than if a home went into foreclosure,” Miller said.
“It’s very expensive to build a new home.
You need a lot of money to do that.”
The American Institute of Architects, which advises developers, said bedpackers are costly and unnecessary.
The AIA said bedding bags can increase the cost and impact of a building, while the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 709 said they are expensive to use and can be harmful to people.
The association said bedpads are not needed in all hospitals, because the beds can often be moved and the equipment and supplies used in other areas can be reused.
The council said the bedpaint is not needed because of its high price tag and the fact that it can only be applied to the roof of the room.
The Council on Contemporary Families, a nonprofit organization, said it opposes bed packing because it has the potential to cause problems for the elderly.
The group said bedbags and other bedding can create bedbugs and bed bugs are not necessarily good for the environment.
A federal study released last year found that bedpets can cause respiratory infections, including pneumonia and tuberculosis, which can lead to death.
The study found that people who live in apartment buildings are more likely to have bedbugs.
